Paris bleibt zwar unangefochtene Nummer 1 meiner persönlichen Traumstädte, allerdings haben sich 2017 noch zwei weitere Citys dazugesellt, die ich entweder nochmals besuchen oder nie wieder vergessen werde. Neben Wien ist das seit Dezember nun auch Rom – die ewige Stadt.
Insgesamt waren wir beinahe eine ganze Woche da, konnten allerdings nur effektiv vier Tage nutzen, da es besonders die ersten 48 Stunden wie aus Kübeln regnete. Kein Wunder, dass wir sofort zu den ersten Sehenswürdigkeiten stromerten als es endlich aufhörte.
Paris is still my personal #1 of dream cities but in 2017 I fell in love with two other capital cities, which I will either visit again or never forget. In additional to Vienna we’re talking about Rome.
Overall we spent almost one week there but could only effectively use four days as it has rained cats and dogs for 48 hours. It was a matter of course that we headed to sights when it finally had stopped.
Tag 1 – Spanische Treppe an der Piazza di Spagna
Eines vorweg: Ende Dezember war Rom vor allem eins – wahnsinnig voll. Die Touristen stapelten sich förmlich und es war oft sehr unangenehm sich durchzuschlängeln. Die Spanische Treppe machte dahingehend keine Ausnahme. Richtig genießen konnten wir die im Jahre 1723 erbaute Freitreppe deshalb leider nicht so richtig, obwohl sie wunderschön ist und im Luxusviertel der Stadt liegt.
Day 1 – Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna
First of all: End of December Rome was extremely overcrowded. Tourists literally piled up and I often didn’t feel comfortable. The Spanish Steps was no exception. This is why we couldn’t really enjoy this world’s largest outside staircase, which was built in 1723 and is situated in the luxury district of the city. Nevertheless it was really impressive.
Tag 2: Piazza Navona, Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II und der Trevi Brunnen
Am zweiten Tag hieß es dann laufen, laufen, laufen. Also, rein in den Camel-Mantel, an die Hand das Weihnachtsgeschenk und los ging es zur Piazza Navona. Charakteristisch für das barocke Rom stand hier einst ein Stadion, welches Julius Cäsar für Wettkämpfe erbauen ließ. Schließlich wurden im Mittelalter Häuser in die Unterbauten der Stadiontribünen eingebaut.
Dazwischen lag der Trevi Brunnen (Fontana di Trevi) – der populärste und mit rund 26 Meter Höhe und rund 50 Meter Breite größte Brunnen Roms und einer der bekanntesten der Welt. Er wurde 1732 bis 1762 im spätbarocken, im Übergang zum klassizistischen Stil, im Anschluss an den Palazzo Polk erbaut und ist eine der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten Roms. Und hier setzte das Stapeln ein. Die Menschen liefen beinahe in den Brunnen hinein, nur um schicke Selfies von sich machen zu können.
Im Anschluss ging es zum Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, der gut bewacht genau an der Piazza Venezia liegt. Es ist das Nationaldenkmal und dem ersten König des neugegründeten Königreichs Italien, Viktor Emanuel II., gewidmet ist. Heute zählt es zu den Staatssymbolen der Italienischen Republik.
Day 2: Piazza Navona, Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II and the Trevi Fountain
On the second day it was all about walking. So, in the camel coat, on the hand the Christmas gift and off we went to the Piazza Navona. Characteristic of the Baroque Rome, once here was a stadium, which Julius Caesar had built for competitions. Finally, in the Middle Ages houses were built in the substructures of the stadium grandstands.
In between was the Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) – the most popular fountain in Rome, about 26 meters high and 50 meters wide, and one of the most famous in the world. It was built between 1732 and 1762 in the late Baroque, in the transition to the classicist style, following the Palazzo Polk and is one of the most important monuments of Rome. And this is where the “stacking” began. People almost ran into the fountain just to take fancy selfies.
Afterwards we went to the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, which is well guarded and close to the Piazza Venezia. It is dedicated to the National Monument and the first king of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II. Today it is one of the state symbols of the Italian Republic.

Hach Rom, da muss ich auch bald mal wieder hin. Rom ist eine so beeindruckende Stadt, alleine die Geschichte, die man in jedem Stein spüren kann. Ich war allerdings bisher immer nur im Hochsommer dort und das kann ganz schön mühsam sein, vor allem was die Touristenmassen angeht, eigentlich eine gute Idee, Rom einmal im Winter auf die Reiseliste zu setzen.
