Nach zwei wirklich intensiven Tagen in Rom wollten wir es in der verbleibenden Zeit etwas ruhiger angehen. Geklappt hat das, indem wir die imposanten Sehenswürdigkeiten auf jeweils zwei volle Tage aufteilten. Die nun folgenden Highlights wären allerdings auch gar nicht anders realisierbar gewesen.
After two really intense days in Rome we decided to take it a bit easier in the remaining time. This has worked out by dividing the imposing sights into two full days. However, the following highlights wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
Petersplatz, Petersdom und Vatikanische Museen (Musei Vaticani)
Die Reise begann am Petersplatz, der erst im 17. Jahrhundert vor dem Petersdom angelegt wurde. Er ist Teil des Territoriums der Vatikanstadt, die Kolonnaden (Säulen) bilden die Staatsgrenze zwischen dem Vatikan und Italien. Auf dem Platz stehend fällt gar nicht auf, dass der Staat im Staat noch viel größer ist als das, was der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt wird. Auf dem Weg dahin, an der hiesigen Mauer vorbei schlendernd und sich durch die Touristenmassen quetschend, wird aber deutlich, dass mehr dahinter steckt.
Im Anschluss daran besuchten wir die Vatikanischen Museen. Highlight: die Sixtinische Kapelle. Ihr Name geht auf Papst Sixtus IV. zurück, der sie im 15. Jahrhundert erbauen ließ. Berühmt ist sie aber vor allem wegen des schmuckreichen Deckengemäldes im Trompe-l’oeil-Effekt von Michelangelo.
Bei der Sixtinischen Kapelle dachte ich unwillkürlich an den 90er-Jahre-Film Good Will Hunting. Es gibt eine Stelle an der Robin Williams zu Matt Damon sagt, er könne nur aus Büchern zitieren, wisse aber nicht wie es in der Sixtinischen Kapelle rieche, denn er sei nie aus Boston rausgekommen.
Aus diesem Grund war ich besonders aufmerksam und schnüffelte (ja, ich schnüffelte) mich durch das wirklich winzige Gebäude. Mit mäßigem Erfolg, denn – trotz der wirklich präsent platzierten Hinweisschilder und den mehrmaligen Ermahnungen der Museumsangestellten – war es vor allem voll, heiß und eng. Dementsprechend roch es eher nach Menschen und Schweiß.
St. Peter’s Square, St- Peter’s Basilica and Vatican Museums (Musei Vaticani)
The journey began at St. Peter’s Square, which was built in the 17th century in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. It’s a part of the territory of the Vatican City, the colonnades (pillars) form the state border between the Vatican and Italy. Standing in the square, it’s not clear at all that the state within a state is much larger than what is shown to the public. On the way there, strolling past the local wall and squeezing through the masses of tourists, it suddenly becomes clear that there have to be more behind it.
Afterwards we headed to the Vatican Museums. Highlight: the Sistine Chapel. It was named after Pope Sixtus IV., who had built it during the 15th century. It’s very famous for the richly painted ceiling in the tromp l’oeil effect by Michelangelo.
At the Sistine Chapel I accidentally thought about the 90s movie Good Will Hunting. There is a scene in which Robin Williams says to Matt Damon he could only quote from books but doesn’t know the smell in the Sistine Chapel because he had never left Boston.
That’s why I was particularly attentive and shopped (yeah, I snooped …) through the pretty tiny building. With less success, because – despite the really presently placed signs and the repeated exhortations of the museum employees – it was really overcrowded, hot and cramped. Accordingly, it smelled more like people and sweat.

Das Beste kommt zum Schluss. Wahrlich so erging es mir mit dem Kolosseum, welches wir am letzten Tag besichtigten. Das Gebäude ist nicht nur wahnsinnig groß, sondern vor allem überaus kalt. Während die Temperaturen draußen um die 14 bis 15 Grad lagen, fiel die Wärme rapide beim Betreten des Gebäudes ab.
Vielleicht lag das an den ganzen Menschenopfern, die es im größten Amphitheater der Welt (und UNESCO Kulturerbe) bei Belustigungs- und Gladiatorenspielen gab.
Nach der Fertigstellung im Jahr 80 n. Chr. fanden 100-tägige Spiele statt, bei denen 5000 Tiere und 7000 Menschen in der Arena getötet wurden.
Das Kolosseum beeindruckte mich deshalb sehr. Gleichzeitig fand ich aber die Historie sehr traurig, weshalb ich es vermied auf den Fotos zu lachen. Wenn es auch sogenannte Spiele waren, viele fanden dort ihr jähes Ende und auf dem Friedhof lacht ihr doch auch nicht, oder?
The Colosseum (Colosseo) or why I look so serious in the pictures
The best comes last. Truly this happened to me with the Colosseum, which we visited on the last day. The building is not only incredibly large but above all very cold. While the temperatures outside were around 14 to 15 degrees, the heat dropped rapidly as you entered the building.
Perhaps it was because of all the human sacrifices in amusement and gladiatorial games in the world’s largest amphitheater (and UNESCO heritage).
After completion in 80 AD, 100-day games were held, killing 5,000 animals and 7,000 people in the arena.
The Colosseum impressed me very much. At the same time, however, I found the story very sad, which is why I avoided laughing at the photos. Although there were so-called games, many found their abrupt end there and you don’t laugh at a funeral, too – do you?
