So my peeps,
I’m back in good old Germany and work has me under control, already. This is why I would like to share my impressions with you, which I’ve gathered on the wonderful island Crete. Currently the political situation there is not the best but tourist are treated wonderfully (because tourism is the biggest industrial sector). Except long queues near cash machines we didn’t notice anything from the deep depression. Flying to Crete was a perfect decision and I will always preserve those vacations in my heart.
With the eyes: What I can really recommend is the beach of Elafonissi! It’s a dream beach looking like you’ve been at the Maldives! Soft sand, clear blue sea but a hard wind.
With the hands: Shopping at Crete is also wonderful: Jewelry shops at every corner and each shop has a different offer! Bargaining is allowed!
With the mouth: The Greeks speak great Englisch (and German). But they’re also happy if the tourist take care of speaking some Greek words: Calimera – Good Morning, Jia Sas – Hello and Goodbye, Kalinichta – Good Evening, Efcharisto – Thank You.
With the ears: Sleeping until noon and getting to the beach until evening is the best recipe for gathering energy. Listening to the waves and wind is wonderful!
With the nose: The cretan kitchen tastes and smells delicious but they use to cook with lots of (typical self-made) olive oil (perfect as a souvenir) and cream (especially the desserts. If you want to eat a real great Cretan meal look for a native restaurant. If the guest are only Greek then it’s the best food you can get ;-)

ich bin wieder zurück im guten alten Deutschland und die Arbeit hat mich auch schon wieder voll unter Kontrolle. Darum wollte ich noch meine Eindrücke mit euch teilen, die ich auf der wundervollen Insel Kreta gesammelt habe. Momentan ist die politische Situation nicht die beste, aber Touristen werden sehr gut behandelt (liegt auch daran, dass der Tourismus den größten Wirtschaftszweig dort bildet). Außer langer Schlangen an Geldautomaten, haben wir von der Wirtschaftskrise nichts bemerkt. Nach Kreta zu fliegen war eine ausgezeichnete Entscheidungen und ich werde diesen Urlaub für immer im Herzen bewahren.
Mit den Augen: Was ich euch wirklich empfehlen kann, ist der Strand von Elafonissi! Der Sand ist weich, das Meer klar und blau – als befände man sich auf den Malediven!
Mit den Händen: Shopping auf Kreta ist wunderbar: An jeder Ecke ist ein Juwelier und jeder hat ein anderes Angebot – feilschen ist erlaubt und wird auch gern mitgemacht!
Mit dem Mund: Die Griechen können sehr gut Englisch und auch Deutsch. Freuen sich aber natürlich, wenn Touristen sich Mühe geben und ein paar griechische Worte von sich geben: Calimera – Guten Morgen, Jia Sas – Hallo und Tschüss, Kalinichta – Guten Abend, Efcharisto – Danke.
Mit den Ohren: Früh ausschlafen, nachmittags an den Strand gehen und dort bis zum Abend bleiben, ist das beste Rezept, um dich zu erholen und auch nicht in der Mittagssonne zu verbrennen. Dem Wind und den Wellen zu lauschen, ist wunderbar.
Mit der Nase: Die kretische Küche ist lecker und duftet herrlich, allerdings wird viel mit typisch selbst gemachten) Olivenöl (perfekt als Souvenir) und Sahne (besonders die Desserts) gekocht. Wenn ihr wirklich richtig gut essen wollt, sucht euch ein einheimisches Restaurant. Handelt es sich bei den Gästen nur um Griechen, werdet ihr das beste Essen der Insel bekommen ;-)

What for amazing pictures, I loved each of them! I loved your post, by the way, the way you showed the island – with nose, ears, etc! A friend of mine was raised up in Crete, where her parents still live and produce their own olive oil (really incredible taste) and she always invited me to go there and I never did… so stupid me :) I may accept the invitation one day :) Your post inspired me!

So happy that you picked the perfect place for your vacation. I keep forgetting about their economic woes even though I hear it every day. Glad it did not affect you. The place looks so beautiful and those shots of you are so gorgeous. The close up on the beach in your cute hat and the shot at the table in front of that awesome looking dessert are 2 favorites.
